"For who is greater, the one
who is at the table or the one who serves?
Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who
serves." --Luke

Ushering Responsibilities
8:45
a.m. service: Arrive 15 minutes before the service

Minimum of four ushers are need.
Locate the bulletins
Open
doors to the church
Wear
identification pocket tab. The tabs should match the color
of the pulpit hanging and are found in the drawer of the table
in the narthex.
Two
ushers stand at the back of the church, just inside of the
double inside doors. At the 11 o’clock service an usher should
stand at each of the side doors. Offer a bulletin to everyone
who enters. Offer to seat members
and/or visitors. This is especially important during the season
of Advent, Palm Sunday, Easter and any Sunday when the church is
filled.
Encourage those with small children to take
advantage of our nursery – send an usher to show the way if
necessary. Nurseries are located on the second floor of the
Will Young Building.
Remain standing in the back of the sanctuary
until the singing of the first hymn. Close the doors to the
sanctuary and remain in the back until the offertory.
During this time the number of worshippers should be counted.
Record the number on a bulletin and place in the bag with the
offering. This should be done for both services.
Upon the call for the offering by the minister, approach the
minister at the front with the offering plates (located in the
chest to the right of the double doors in the narthex). The
ushers should line up in front of the minister. The two ushers
on the outside turn toward the outside and proceed to the
outside aisles. The two ushers on the inside should proceed to
the first pews in the center aisle. Proceed to collect the
offering beginning at the front, going from side to side and
complete collection of the offering at the back. Turn on the
light switch (marked with a blue dot) located on the wall in
narthex to alert organist about the doxology.
Remain at the back, standing with the offering plates until the
singing of the Doxology, then approach the minister with the
offering plates and stand at the front, facing the minister
until after the offertory prayer. You will then carry the
offering plates back to the narthex. One usher should put the
money in one of the bags in the chest. Turn off light switch.
One usher should be seated near the back so that
upon the conclusion of the service, he/she can open the doors to
the narthex during the last hymn and assist the minister.
After the service the
bulletins that are left in the sanctuary should be gathered and
left at the back of the church. The pages from membership pads
should be collected and placed with offering.
NEW! Take the money
bag(s) to the 2nd floor of the Fellowship House (office top of
the stairs-far left corner-cabinet under staff mailboxes) and
drop into the safe in Financial Secretary's Office.
